One of my fiber pieces was accepted into the SPUN juried exhibit!

One of my first projects: Celestial Flower, which is felted and sewn--and an homage to my mother.

My piece “Celestial Flower” was accepted into the juried show SPUN, an innovative all-fiber exhibit, at the Nest Arts Factory in Bridgeport, CT. Show dates are September 10-October 3, 2016. The juror for the show is Dr. Linda Wolk-Simon, director and chief curator of the University Galleries for Fairfield University in Connecticut.

The felted and stitched work was created during my year at UMass Dartmouth from wool roving and silk dupioni that was sandwiched between stabilizer and thread painted, and then welt-felted into a rounded flower vessel. Flower pistils were created from dyed and painted silk cocoons, and the stem was formed from wire coated with layers of felted merino wool and attached via needle-felting.

The piece speaks of the connection between the heavens and the earth, merging a fertile, earth-bound flower with the surreal shading and colors of the celestial sky.

An opening reception that is open to the public will be held on Saturday, September 10, from 6PM to 8PM, at the NEST Arts Factory, 1720 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06605. www.spunfiberexhibit.com; www.nestartsfactory.com
